Ald. Lyle speaking at the GCA and a Chatham TIF

In an e-mail forwarded from JP Paulus our other blogger here courtesy of the Greater Chatham Alliance:
Alderman Freddrenna Lyle will be our Guest Speaker on Saturday, June 20.

Needless to say, if you want her and her staff to know how you feel about our community, this is your opportunity to be heard!

For instance, a reliable GCA source revealed to us, after some initial inquiries regarding City of Chicago TIFS, that Alderman Lyle had to be prodded into supporting a TIF for Englewood. It seems all of the other alderman who had a piece of Englewood were more aggressive in seeking a TIF for the area. But Lyle showed a real lack of interest at first until the others moved on it.

To understand what a TIF is, please read the other attached PDF with this e-mail. You will notice that TIFS are given to Blighted Areas (i.e. communities like Englewood -- actually Park Manor would start to qualify).

They are also given to Conservation Areas. Could it be that Chatham might fall into the Conservation Category when you look at 79th Street in respect to business (i.e. 79th & State Street)?

Not to mention, with a significantly, heavy senior population in Chatham and the reality of more homes going up for sale due to owner deaths, shouldn't this community start to plan on how we will attract new middle class families before it's too late?

Do we want to see a surge of rentals happening where we as a community have no control over what types of tenants are placed there?

Questions like these and crime issues need to be addressed. So tell your neighbors, family and friends about this meeting. Flyers will go out to the rest of the community this weekend.

I don't know where the reliable GCA source got their information but as is the case with anonymous sources, the information is totally wrong. The Englewood Kennedy KingTIF has been planned for years by me (so I guess I prodded myself?). It was/is to be used for the revitalization of the east Englewood area and the old Kennedy King site. In fact we've already had meetings in Englewood about it, but the GCA doesn't represent Englewood and their source probably doesn't live in Englewood, so they might not be aware of that fact.

At first I thought the source was merely ignorant of the facts but then I realized that it was not ignorance but maliciousness. I came to that conclusion because the topic was Englewood and Greater Chatham Alliance has no interest in Englewood. Thus the only reason for inserting this nonsense was to convince the recipients that I am incompetent, incapable or unworthy of being their Alderman. It was that malevolent intent that prevented the writer from checking even the most basic of facts.

Fact 1. The 6th Ward has 2 TIF Districts, on this side of the Dan Ryan. Fact 2. One of those TIFs i.e. The Chatham Club TIF was designed to and did create more than 100 new homes at 89th & Indiana for middle class families. Fact 3. The second TIF, known as the Cottage Grove TIF, was created prior to the opening of Target and covers Cottage Grove from 69th-95th St. Coincidentally it also extends down 79th St. So the truth is that a TIF does exist in Park Manor; and also on 79th St. in Chatham; and TIF funds from the Chatham Club TIF brought new middle class families to the Ward. But why bother with a little thing like the truth?
