Mather's More Than a Cafe is part of the Mather's Lifeways program. The mission of Mather's is (from their website)...
While the programs are focused on senior citizens, they operate 3 cafes which are open to the general public. One of them is located in Chatham, at 33 E. 83rd Street. It's a somewhat subtle building, easy to miss...but hard to forget.
i took my family there a short while back, and here are some of my observations:

Simply, we enhance the lives of older adults by creating Ways to Age Well. Founded in 1941 by entrepreneur and humanitarian Alonzo Mather, we're dedicated to providing a continuum of living and care; making neighborhoods better places for older adults to live, work, learn, contribute, and play; and identifying, implementing, and sharing progressive practices for wellness, workforce issues, memory care support, and empowering caregivers.

- Very friendly staff, eager to help you feel welcome
- They accept credit cards (as opposed to some other local businesses, such as the 95th street "Welcome to the Cash Only Popeye's").
- Mather's has a look and feel like a brand new coffeeshop, with soft music in the background
- It's family friendly -- we were quickly able to get a nice high chair for my 2 year old
- The pancakes have an apple-cinnamon taste, and are FANTASTIC, some of the best i ever had!
- The food in general is proportioned in healthy servings. You probably won't have leftovers for home, but you also won't get overweight. You will enjoy your meal, however.
- You can't beat the coffee prices!
- They don't expect tips, unlike other cafes. i overheard the staff wondering what to do with my tip as we walked out the door. The service definitely deserves something extra!
- Plenty of parking
